At The Classical Institute, this programme offers a sustained introduction to the Persian of Jalal al-Din Rumi’s Mathnawi through close engagement with one of the most influential works of classical Persian literature. Led by Dr Colin Turner, participants examine the linguistic, literary, and poetic dimensions of the text while developing greater confidence in reading classical Persian. Through guided reading, recitation, and careful attention to vocabulary, syntax, and recurring literary forms, the programme situates the Mathnawi within the wider Persianate intellectual tradition and explores its enduring significance within the study of Persian language and literature.
Persian Through the Mathnawi: Reading Rumi in the Original
Programme Overview
This programme offers a guided introduction to the Persian of Jalal al-Din Rumi’s Mathnawi, one of the most celebrated works of classical Persian literature. Designed for upper beginners and lower-intermediate students of Persian, the programme aims not simply to “study Rumi”, but to use the Mathnawi itself as a living gateway into the Persian language.
Rather than approaching the text as an intimidating literary monument to be unpacked line-by-line, students will read together slowly, collaboratively, and repeatedly, developing familiarity with the rhythms, vocabulary, imagery, and grammatical patterns of classical Persian through direct engagement with the poetry itself.
Sessions will combine:
• Guided reading of selected passages from the Mathnawi
• Vocabulary-building and grammatical reinforcement
• Close attention to key Persian structures and recurring literary forms
• Listening and recitation
• Discussion of the themes, humour, symbolism, and narrative voice of the text
Particular attention will be given to helping students bridge the gap between modern introductory Persian and the more literary Persian of classical poetry. Students will gradually become familiar with:
• Common poetic vocabulary
• Literary syntax
• Idiomatic expressions
• Rhetorical repetition
• The musicality of Persian verse
The programme assumes no prior experience with classical Persian literature. Readings will be carefully selected and fully supported in class, with emphasis placed on building confidence, enjoyment, and sustained exposure rather than exhaustive technical mastery.
Because the Mathnawi is rich in story, dialogue, paradox, and vivid imagery, it offers an ideal environment in which to deepen one’s Persian while simultaneously encountering one of the central texts of the Persianate intellectual and spiritual tradition.
By the end of the programme, students should expect not only to have strengthened their Persian comprehension, but also to have developed a greater sense of familiarity with the language, texture, and imaginative world of the Mathnawi itself.
