The Classical Institute is honoured to host a special seminar introducing key aspects of Ibn Sina's epistemology (theory of knowledge). This session will primarily explore the foundational concepts of tasawwur (conceptualisation) and tasdiq (affirmation), along with the critical distinction between badihi (self-evident) and iktisabi (acquired) knowledge. Delivered by Dr Saad Ismail, an MPhil candidate in Philosophical Theology at the University of Oxford, this accessible seminar will focus on the core elements of Ibn Sina's theory of knowledge and their significance within classical Islamic philosophy. Dr Ismail will present these concepts in a clear and engaging manner suitable for both newcomers and those familiar with philosophical discourse. This seminar offers an opportunity to explore how Ibn Sina's epistemological insights shaped intellectual traditions across cultures and continue to hold relevance for contemporary philosophical discussions.
